Char Dham Yatra is one of the holy pilgrimages of Sanatan Hindu religion. This journey starts from the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand and ends at Badrinath Dham. Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand includes four Dhams - Yamunotri Dham, Gangotri Dham, Kedarnath Dham and Badrinath Dham.

The holy place Shri Badrinath Dham is the unbreakable center of faith and devotion of Sanatan Hindu religion situated in the lap of Nar and Narayan mountain. This holy place is famous all over the world as the Tapabhoomi of Nar and Narayan, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu came to the banks of Mother Alaknanda river for his rigorous penance and was mesmerized by seeing the beautiful place. This is the reason why this place is currently known as Badri Vishal.
According to historical beliefs, Adi Guru Shankaracharya had built Badrinath Dham in about the eighth century. It is mentioned in the Puranas that the devotees had received the darshan of Lord Vishnu in person. This is the reason why this holy place came to be known as Badrinath Dham.
5. Spiritual importance of Char Dham Yatra

There are different means of reaching the four Dhams
1. Road
The Char Dham Yatra is done directly by road from the major cities of Uttarakhand, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Delhi and travel is done by private and public vehicles to reach the respective routes.
2. Railway
(A) The nearest railway station to reach Yamunotri Dham is Dehradun, which is about 170 kilometers away from the holy place Janaki Chatti.
(B) The nearest railway station to reach Gangotri Dham is Rishikesh, the distance of Gangotri temple from Rishikesh station is about 250 kilometers where the journey is done by road.
(C) To travel to Kedarnath Dham, first of all the passengers have to go to Gaurikund from Rishikesh railway station and from Gaurikund to Shri Kedarnath Dham, all the devotees have to walk about 15 kilometers.
(D) The nearest railway station to visit Badrinath Dham is Rishikesh which is located at a distance of about 280 km from Badrinath temple.
